The CEW Beauty Award is the preeminent honor in the beauty industry. The primary goal of the awards is to recognize the most innovative products introduced in the previous calendar year and bring this news directly to the consumer. Winners are voted on by CEW’s 4,000 members, all female executives in the cosmetics industry. Media coverage reaches upwards of 150 Million consumers.
The Product Demonstration and Cocktail Party, held on February 20, 2008 at the Metropolitan Pavilion and Altman Building, represented the commencement of the annual awards program. Guaranteeing a hands-on environment for judging each entry in its best light, all product entries were showcased and CEW members cast their votes, which determined the finalists and the winner in each category. The 27 categories encompass cosmetics, skin care, hair, scent, and bath and body. Products were represented from both prestige and mass distribution lines benefiting both large and small beauty companies.
The winners were announced at the annual CEW Beauty Awards Luncheon—held May 2, 2008 at the Waldorf-Astoria—which attracted more than 1,200 industry leaders.

The charitable event was held on December 7th at the Waldorf=Astoria Hotel in New York. The event drew the support of more than 1,000 beauty industry executives. The Women in Beauty Series
with Kathy O’Brien and Leela Petrakis
CEW welcomed Kathy O'Brien, Dove Marketing Director US, Unilever, and Leela Petrakis, General Manager, Neutrogena Cosmetics, Johnson & Johnson to speak as part of their Women In Beauty Series on October 24th at the Harmonie Club in New York City. Jenny B. Fine, Editor, WWDBeautyBiz moderated the discussion.
The theme of the event was “Innovations in Brand Building.” Both Dove and Neutrogena have been able to successfully leverage the core equity of healthy beauty from a single soap bar into a vast portfolio of products. O’Brien and Petrakis revealed what it takes to keep their respective brands vibrant today.
O’Brien said that one of Dove’s guiding principles is “developing advertising campaigns that break stereotypes.” The Dove Campaign for Real Beauty, which uses real women instead of models, has been successful in broadening the standard definitions of beauty. Petrakis said that branding for Neutrogena always conveys a clear message with—of course—the backing of dermatologists. She said, “It is our job to have the right products to help women protect their skin, but we also need to educate them.”
At CEW’s Women in Beauty Series, leading women offer insights into beauty industry issues and inspiration for professional growth. Prior to the discussion, attendees have the opportunity to network with colleagues in an informal setting. The October Women In Beauty Series event was sponsored by: Shape, Givaudan, 24Seven and WWDBeautyBiz.
