With the goal of reducing waste and alleviating confusion around recycling beauty empties, bareMinerals is launching a new mail-in recycling program, beginning August 1. Through the Give Back, Get Back Recycling Program, customers nationwide will be able to send in their bareMinerals products in exchange for loyalty points which can be redeemed for free products, discounts, donations, and more. The program is being piloted in partnership with g2 Revolution, a sustainability organization that helps develop innovative recycling solutions.

“This service fits into our brand mission of doing good for skin, community and planet. We have already recycled 52,000 pound of plastic through our boutiques and now we want to broaden our reach online,” said Jill Scalamandre, President, bareMinerals. “We continue to incorporate recycled plastic and recyclable glass in our packaging and we are minimizing the use of cartons. When we do use cartons, they are all FSC certified. Our last two years of Christmas collections have been all about sustainable packaging — from primary to giftbox.”

To participate, customers simply add “recycling kit” to their online order. They are then sent a recyclable mailer — made of 100 percent recycled material and packaged with a prepaid return label — to direct their beauty empties to the g2 facility in Findlay, Ohio where they undergo a low-emission waste-to-energy conversion. Through this state-of-the-art process, g2 helps power about 50 percent of downtown Indianapolis with non-recyclable waste materials that were diverted from landfills.

“Given the amount of plastic used in the beauty industry, we’re very excited to partner with bareMinerals for a first of its kind mail-in recycling program that allows customers to recycle product packaging from the comfort of their home,” said Tonya Martin, VP of Business Development, g2 revolution. “This is the first time we’ve ever developed and launched a consumer mail-back program with a beauty brand, and it’s a game changer. Our initiative fully supports not only the bareMinerals sustainability story but the sustainable beauty movement as a whole by bringing circular solutions for hard-to-recycle cosmetic items directly to consumer’s homes.”

The Give Back, Get Back mail-in program will be available in the contiguous 48 states, except California. At this time only bareMinerals products are accepted; however, by 2022, the program will expand to include beauty products from any brand. For customers wishing to recycle beauty empties from other brands, they may drop them off in-person at any bareMinerals boutique.
