This week’s roundup focuses on the latest beauty industry technology innovations, including Il Makiage’s digital shade matching platform, CHI’s high-tech hair color solution app and YouCam’s new AI and AR programs for retailers.

Il Makiage Launches Online Shade Matching Technology

To help aid consumer frustration over finding the ideal foundation shade, Il Makiage has released a new technology, PowerMatch, which utilizes machine learning to match a customer’s foundation shade from 50 options, virtually. Through a series of online quiz responses, the PowerMatch algorithm uses hundreds of thousands of data points and information on 700 different skin tone combinations to predict the best shade for an individual. Consumers then receive their shade in the mail and can test it out for 14 days before committing to purchase, as part of the brand’s Try Before You Buy program. The foundation retails for $44.

CHI to Debut Hair Color Tool

CHI and LG Household & Healthcare (LG H&H) are planning to introduce a new color technology, the CHI Color Master, which aims to take the guesswork out of hair color. Using precision technology, a high-tech spectroscope has been designed to read a person’s natural or current hair color and then formulate custom shades. The Color Master will have the capability to mix over 18,000 formulations and allows the colorist to further customize with additional additives, offering limitless possibilities. Additionally, stylists will be able to use the CHI Color Master App to show clients a true-life representation of what the color will look like on their hair. The technology is a collaboration of more than six companies within LG Group and its affiliates, and has been in research for more than two years. It is expected to debut this fall in the U.S., and then expand internationally.
