Scientists may have found a new way to treat wrinkled skin and scars by regenerating fatty cells, reports The Telegraph. Testing was conducted around a molecule, Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMP), which was found to instruct scar-forming cells to transform themselves into fatty cells that are lost when scars form or when skin ages.

The study, led by scientist Professor George Cotsarelis from the University of Pennsylvania, may pave the way to scar-free healing of wounds, as well as groundbreaking anti-aging treatments.

“Essentially, we can manipulate wound healing so that it leads to skin regeneration rather than scarring,” said Professor Cotsarelis. “Our findings can potentially move us toward a new strategy to regenerate adipocytes in wrinkled skin, which could lead us to brand new anti-aging treatments.”
