Perfume in Texas. Face cream in Nevada. Nail polish in Hawaii. These were the top-ranked beauty gifts by state, according to a new survey conducted by French botanical beauty brand, Yves Rocher.

Using Google Trends, as well as their own in-house beauty sales findings, the company discovered that residents of each state have very specific desires about what they’d like to find under the tree on Christmas morning. Some of the results were surprising, said Montreal-based Nathalia Del Moral, General Director North America of Yves Rocher. Other results, not so much.

“We really thought lipstick would be more popular,” said Nathalia. “And (we) were surprised that Utah and Oregon showed up as searching the most for beauty gifts. Although, after digging into the research, there is considerable interest in both states for beauty-focused care.”

Nathalia said some of that interest may have been fueled by the fact that a new season of the “Real Housewives” series is filmed in Salt Lake City, with cast members showcasing their interest in natural wellness.

Other results were more expected, such as lipstick being the most popular gift in New York, and nail polish in Hawaii.

“We were pretty pleased to see that perfume gift sets popped up as one of the most popular gift products as we do see considerable interest in this type of gift during the holidays,” said Nathalia. “It affirmed what we’ve seen in our own sales.”

Perfume gift sets and face cream ranked as the most popular across 11 states each, indicating that 22 states search for one of these two types of products more than others. Perfume gift sets are especially popular in Southern states, but also in the Midwest, including states such as Missouri and Illinois. Those living in drier climates, including Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, are happy to receive face cream, while those in South Dakota are split between eye shadow palettes, body lotion, and hair masks.

This is the first time the brand has released a survey like this, with one of the goals to help consumers make smarter gift-giving decisions.

“We wanted to see what people are actually searching for when it comes to beauty and gifting around the holiday season,” said Nathalia. “And Google Trends is a great resource that allows us the ability for our team to conduct this sort of analysis. It’s also a great way to see what items are trending in different states. If we have one specific product that stands out across the country, that doesn’t mean it will be a hit in every single state. It also helps us understand a little more which states prefer which particular products more than others.”
