Leaders and tastemakers in the hair and heat-tool space, The Beachwaver Co., is making its foray into the hair care and fragrance arenas, respectively. The brand’s latest range, Make Waves Collection, launches June 5. Here, we caught up with Beachwaver founders Sarah Potempa, Erin Potempa Wall and Emily Potempa about the inspiration for the line’s stunning packaging to the offerings themselves.

“For more than seven years, The Beachwaver Co. has inspired women and provided them with the tools to help them feel more confident and beautiful in their everyday lives,” said celebrity hairstylist and The Beachwaver Co. co-founder, Sarah Potempa. The process for creating this sustainable, innovative hair care range began about two years ago. Sarah worked with the brand’s team of chemists to develop formulas used in the Make Waves Collection that strengthen hair from the inside out.

The new line and the associated ‘Dream Big, Make Waves’ campaign is dedicated to innovation, accessibility, sustainability and empowerment, Sarah noted. “The Beachwaver Co. believes that we are all beautiful and capable of incredible things, and we are here to support and empower people to confidently follow their dreams,” she said. The trio’s goal with the campaign is to tell all of the amazing stories of strong, powerful women who are motivated to accomplish their goals, whatever they may be.

Packaged in sunset-inspired, beachy pink and purple packaging, the look for the range was created by co-founder and Creative Director, Emily Potempa. She photographed the images for collection with the express intent to have the packaging reflect the sisters’ personalities — happy, friendly, optimistic — which will look to help customers feel their best every single day, she said.

The Make Waves Collection

As for the products themselves, the Make Waves Collection features items that aim to help with creating texture, braids and waves, all while strengthen strands.

Good Vibes & BRB Blonde Haircare

There are two shampoo and conditioner combos, the first is called Good Vibes, which blends coconut oil, Tahitian monoi flower, and shea butter and the brand’s signature Bondi Beach Day scent. BRB Blonde is a purple shampoo and conditioner designed to brighten blonde hair, thanks to Tahitian monoi flower and shea butter, as well. The latter duo is scented with a Brazilian Berry fragrance.

Shubie Surf

In the styling space, the brand offers Shubie Surf, which is a wave spray, infused with coconut oil and sea kelp to enhance natural texture while adding strength, thanks to the brand’s proprietary formula. This is a departure from most wave spray offerings on the market, differentiating Make Waves Shubie Surf from the array of salt and sugar sprays.

Shubie Surf Beach Spray enhances natural waves and provides extra shine, thanks to its formulation with HiX, a hydrogen and ionic alpha bond multiplier that penetrates the internal cortex of the hair to strengthen while you style. Added coconut oil penetrates deep into the hair follicle and stimulates growth while adding softness and shine, while the sea kelp extract helps to moisturize and repair.

As for the name? Sarah noted that it refers to a vintage term for tourists going down from Manhattan to the Jersey shore for the day. “The locals would call them ‘shubies,’ which is someone who dresses like a surfer, who doesn’t know how to surf,” Sarah said.

Braid Balm

Braid Balm is a pre-braid prep product, featuring a foam formula that strengthens hair while giving smooth, frizz-free braids. It’s scented with Bondi Beach Day, as well. In addition to strengthening, Braid Balm preps by detangling hair before you braid to ensure a frizz-free and smooth braid. It also yields defined waves when you take out your braid.

B.Bungalow by The Beachwaver Co.

Beachwaver Co., which are sustainably and ethically made perfumes inspired by nature. In addition to Bali Beach Night and Polynesian Pink Sugar, there’s the aforementioned Bondi Beach Day, which is the aroma for many of the hair care products. The Beachwaver Co. plans to create more scents in the future with B.Bungalow. “We love our partnership and are always striving to create new, beachy scents that will make every day feel like a vacation,” said Sarah.

Erin Potempa stressed that as a female-founded and run company, they have “a responsibility and an obligation to fight for equality, opportunity and sustainability.” After more than two years of research and development, the team is proud to provide a line of vegan haircare that’s cruelty-free and made with recyclable packaging. “Both the environment and sustainability are incredibly important to me,” said Erin Potempa, President and Co-Founder of The Beachwaver Co. “We have a corporate responsibility to provide a quality product in a sustainable fashion. We also need to use our platform to educate consumers about recyclability and the importance of sustainability, as well as why we’re putting specific ingredients into our products.”
