As clean beauty continues to become less niche and more mainstream, organic cosmetics emporiums and wellness-focused lifestyle boutiques are cropping up in New York City.

Case in point: The Detox Market. With roots in Venice Beach, California, The Detox Market has gained popularity over the past several years and now offers six locations spread throughout Los Angeles and Toronto, and this month, they added their seventh location in Manhattan. Specializing in skin care and beauty, The Detox Market is a destination for those looking to remove toxicity from products they use day to day. The store offers a curation of eco-friendly, non-toxic, cruelty-free brands in Beauty, Wellness, Health and Home.

The green beauty flagship store in Manhattan sits on the bustling corner of Houston and Elizabeth Streets in trendy SoHo, and offers cult favorites from brands such as Odacité, RMS Beauty, Josh Rosebrook, Tata Harper, Kjaer Weis and May Lindstrom. The New York store also sells indie, New York-based favorites such as EiR NYC, Meow Meow Tweet and Lurk Made. Here, some of the ways the store’s offerings differentiate it from others in the clean beauty space.

It’s Not Limited to Just Beauty

There’s a personal care element to The Detox Market’s bevy of merchandise. A smile care section shows off clean, natural toothpastes and oral hygiene products. There’s also an area devoted to clean, aluminum-free deodorants. To house supplements stunningly, the store sells a beautifully packaged pink pill case from Port and Polish that’s a far cry from something an octogenarian would carry.

A Place to Gather

The Detox Market’s two-story, 2,100-square-foot flagship store provides not only a retail floor, but an upstairs space for workshops, a private area for treatments and one-on-one consultations, plus a rooftop for gatherings. The Detox Market worked with Suulin Architects, who drew inspiration from the botanical ingredients of the products. The interior features a naturally finished wall of ash wood cabinets, while the islands boast a selection of ingredient plants, creating a natural experience for the customer. The second floor is set up to look like an inviting apartment providing a warm environment for private events and workshops, as well as space for skin, makeup and hair consultations.

The Selection is Tightly Edited

The Detox Market taps a community of beauty-minded experts to test out hundreds of natural products available on the market to find brands that meet with their own standards. The products sold at the store and online must be free of banned ingredients according to a comprehensive list that is continuously updated and available online for customers to review. The testing process continues over several weeks so that they can assure quality and efficacy, but also makes sure that the item is a pleasure to use.

Meet the Maker Series

The store offers intimate workshops and events with the founders of some of the brands it carries. For a fee, customers can come to these soirees, talk to the brains behind their go-to products, and leave with a bag of goodies post-event.
