Unilever has struck a deal to acquire prestige skin care brand Tatcha for an undisclosed amount, the company said in a press release. Tatcha has become a cult favorite introducing Japanese skin care to other parts of the world.

“Tatcha is one of the best performing beauty brands in North America, famous for its exceptional product experience and unique combination of natural ingredients and high product efficacy. Thanks to [founder] Vicky [Tsai’s] passion and expertise, iconic products like The Water Cream and The Silk Canvas have become the cornerstone of long-term consumer loyalty,” said Unilever EVP and CEO Prestige, Vasiliki Petrou.

Published reports are estimating the deal is close to $500 million.

Tatcha was founded in 2009 by Vicky Tsai. She was recently honored by CEW as a Female Founder whose vision helped propel entrepreneurship within the beauty industry. In her acceptance speech Vicky said she started her own company because she was burned out from corporate life.

“I did not have great managers or mentors to learn from, and certainly not women. I started my own company out of a need and frankly a desire to create a place where I wanted to be and do meaningful work.”
