From L’Oréal’s ambitions to build Gucci Beauty into a global powerhouse to investors backing the future of biotech, AI, and longevity, beauty is becoming increasingly focused on sustainable growth and competitive advantage.
Two brands that share space on shelves, in carts, and in the hearts of their communities are blurring the lines between skin care and makeup. E.l.f. and Bubble are partnering to create a hybrid collection that brings together not just their products but their communities. The limited-edition collab brings to life three products: Camo Slide, a lightweight blush serum that combines buildable color with hyaluronic acid for a hydrated, dewy finish; Drop N’ Dunk, a dual-chamber bronzing and moisturizer hybrid that delivers customizable glow and lasting hydration; and Glow Talk, a glossy lip serum that combines buildable color, shine, and long-lasting hydration. The beauty industry’s biggest players are thinking bigger than ever. L’Oréal’s latest results underscore how global beauty leaders are leveraging acquisitions and iconic brands to fuel their next phase of growth. The French beauty giant is aiming to more than triple sales of Gucci Beauty after assuming the brand’s license next year, while shrugging off the impact of U.S. tariffs to deliver record first-half profit margins. On March 31, L’Oréal completed its acquisition of Kering’s beauty business — which includes the Gucci, Balenciaga, and Bottega Veneta beauty licenses — for €4 billion, further strengthening its luxury portfolio. The company has also successfully managed the Saint Laurent beauty license since 2008. (Financial Times)
If the first quarter hinted that a new cycle in beauty investing was beginning, the second quarter confirmed it. Despite an unsettled macro backdrop, capital continued to move into the industry, but with a different set of priorities. Investors are looking beyond the next viral product and toward the companies, technologies, suppliers, and adjacent categories they believe can shape beauty over the next decade. From oral care and longevity to biotech, AI, and manufacturing, the market is expanding its definition of beauty and placing a premium on businesses with the capabilities to become larger, more durable, and more strategically important over time. The consistency between the first and second quarters is what makes the data so interesting. Rather than proving to be a short-lived rebound, the trends that emerged early in the year accelerated through the second quarter, providing the clearest indication yet that beauty investing has entered a new phase. At the same time, not every brand is making the journey forward. As companies refine their global strategies, portfolio optimization is becoming just as important as expansion, with brands willing to sunset weaker assets to concentrate resources on their strongest growth opportunities. LG Household & Health Care has discontinued its color makeup brand TIPSY. This move is part of the company’s brand restructuring, which shifts away from expanding market share through launching more brands, and instead focuses investments on more competitive brands. The decision to streamline underperforming brands comes as LG Household & Health Care seeks to reduce its reliance on the Chinese market and reorganize its overseas operations, focusing on North America and Japan. According to the cosmetics industry as of July 31, LG Household & Health Care ended the TIPSY business in the first half of this year. In November 2020, the company acquired a 70% stake in TIPSY’s operating company, Roa Korea, for KRW 1.18 billion, having determined that VDL alone had limitations in attracting younger consumers accustomed to online shopping.
