“The sun care market for Black women wasn’t established until Black Girl Sunscreen,” says Shontay Lundy, founder of the pioneering sun care brand. One of CEW’s five 2024 Visionary Award Honorees being recognized on the evening of May 7 in L.A., Lundy saw a gap in the market for a sunscreen that did not leave a white cast on melanated skin. Available in 20,000 retailers across the U.S., bestsellers include Black Girl Sunscreen SPF 30, and BGS Kids for children.

In breaking news, the Estée Lauder Companies has reported net sales of $3.94 billion for its third quarter, ending on March 31, 2024. Its skin care category led the way, seeing high-single-digit growth, while net sales rose in almost all the company’s product categories. “With our third quarter results and fourth quarter outlook, we are confident that the second half of fiscal 2024 will prove to be an inflection point for our company performance,” said Fabrizio Freda, Estée Lauder Companies’ President and Chief Executive Officer.

On the other side of the pond, L’Oréal Paris has tapped actress Elle Fanning to be the new juror of the L’Oréal Paris Lights on Women’s Worth prize, presented at the Cannes Film Festival to an emerging female filmmaker. Until this year, Kate Winslet has had the role. “For L’Oréal Paris, the Festival de Cannes is another occasion to empower every woman to express their true selves and to overcome barriers,” said Delphine Viguier-Hovasse, L’Oréal Paris global brand president. “Our commitment to female short-film directors is a first step toward creating lasting change against gender imbalance in the film industry.”
