Today at CEW, we spotlight four upcoming MoCRA developments to have on your radar. These significant changes to the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act (MoCRA) include items related to products containing talc and PFAs (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), fragrance allergen labeling, as well as potential litigation risks, and are designed to further enhance industry safety and compliance. Don’t miss our report that unpacks the implications for brands and consumers.
Also at CEW, we talk to Evolvetogether’s founder Cynthia Sakai about the story behind her protective mask business-turned-personal care company. A new body wash and lotion will drop later this year. Evolvetogether is available in 120 doors across the U.S. and has now entered 60 Bluemercury stores. “We had to look at how we could compete in a world of influencer brands, how we could build a brand that had soul, that felt elevated,” Sakai told CEW.
In executive news, Chanel has tapped Simona Cattaneo – who has worked at Coty, L’Oréal, Burberry and Dior – as its new Fragrance and Beauty President, replacing Anne Kirby. And in business updates, Puig – the Spanish beauty brand owner of Byredo, Charlotte Tilbury and Dr. Barbara Sturm – reported a 26% drop in profits in the first-half 2024, but a 10% sales increase in H1. Its fragrance and fashion division was the top performer, with a growth of 10.7%. In scent launches, Brooke DeVard, host of the Naked Beauty podcast, has unveiled a namesake scent for the show, created in partnership with incubator Slate Brands.
In breaking retail news, Net-a-Porter has announced it is closing its in-house beauty business, which will be replaced by an affiliate sales model in early 2025. Instead of having its own beauty inventory, the company will direct shoppers to the websites of featured brands. In brick-and-mortar news, L’Occitane en Provence has revitalized its Manhattan boutique on the Upper West Side to create a “distinctive experience, immersing visitors in the essence of L’Occitane’s origins,” according to Yann Tanini, Managing Director of L’Occitane North America. Meanwhile, Kiristie Streicher – celebrity brow-groomer and founder of The Nurtured Brow in Los Angeles – is hosting a two-day pop-up at 11 Howard, in New York City, today and tomorrow.
