Ulta Beauty has promoted Kelly Mahoney to the role of Chief Marketing Officer. She takes over for Michelle Crossan-Matos, who left the retailer last month. In her new position, Mahoney will be responsible for overseeing Ulta’s brand marketing, media planning, PR, consumer insights, along with its social media and influencer strategy and retail media network, UB Media. “In my 10 years with Ulta Beauty, I have worked continuously to garner the unparalleled brand loyalty and trust that we’ve earned with our guests,” commented Mahoney. “As Chief Marketing Officer, I will build on this while deepening our brand purpose of unleashing possibilities in new and meaningful ways to inspire, engage, and empower every beauty enthusiast.”
Also in Ulta Beauty executive news, Amiee Bayer-Thomas has been named Chief Retail Officer, and Mike Maresca as Chief Technology and Transformation Officer. Both have served as part of Ulta Beauty’s executive leadership team. Ulta Beauty CEO, Kecia Steelman, said of the recent appointments, “A critical part of our growth strategy is our people, and we are building the C-Suite of the future at Ulta Beauty – one that delivers results, leads with empathy, and values inclusion…These leaders were hand-picked based on their impact on our business, associates, and guests, and I’m proud to say all three represent the incredible talent inside our organization.”
In other executive news, The Fragrance Foundation UK has appointed Vanita Sabnani Dalamal as its new Chairman. Sabnani Dalamal is Vice President of Transformation, Strategy, and Creative Lab at Puig. In addition, Jane Boardman OBE, who has been on the board for 10 years, has been made Vice Chair. Boardman OBE is a Strategic Communications Consultant and Founding Chair of the British Beauty Council. And speaking of female leadership, WWD talks to Olaplex CEO Amanda Baldwin about her strategic vision for the hair and scalp care brand. These include giving Olaplex packaging a less clinical feeling, the introduction of a new logo and “finding novel applications” of Olaplex’s technology.
On the other side of the pond, Chanel has debuted a new verification e-logo for authorised online partners, in an effort to deter counterfeits. Meanwhile, French lawmakers are considering passing legislation which will prohibit the manufacture and sale of products containing perfluorinated alkylated substances (PFAS), known as “forever chemicals”, in products including cosmetics.
In other breaking news, Violette_FR has inked its first U.S. retail partnership, with Sephora. Cult products such as the Bisou Balm and Boum-Boum Milk will drop in 190 stores on February 28. And Prai Beauty has been acquired by Luxury Brands LLC, in partnership with The Dodo Group. The financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
