A new report by Circana confirms that the growth streak of both prestige and mass beauty brands continued in 2023, with U.S. sales of prestige products hitting the $31.7 billion mark last year. “Makeup was the fastest-growing category based on dollar sales in the prestige channel,” reports Andrea Nagel at CEW today. “In the mass market, makeup and skin care were the only two categories to grow based on units sold.” Nagel unpacks Circana’s key insights, from the popularity of prestige lip products in makeup and serums in skin care, to fragrance’s heady sales figures reported last year. In prestige hair products, styling innovation stole the show. Larissa Jensen, Global Beauty Industry Advisor at Circana, said “this performance is remarkable”, while stressing the need for brands to be aware of the economic pressures on consumers, and to focus on “flexibility, creative thinking, and effectively harnessing high consumer engagement”.
