Today marks the debut of a new CEW editorial franchise, Show Me the Science, one that takes a deep dive into a science-led beauty brand and reveals what makes it tick. Kicking off this new feature is Plated Skin Science, a doctor-founded product range created as the result of pioneering medical research in cardiovascular regeneration. Co-founding doctors Atta Behfar, MD, PhD and Andre Terzic, MD, PhD, were looking into the action of human platelets in regenerating tissue in heart failure patients when they found that exosomes—the body’s cellular healing messengers—were responsible for significantly better patient outcomes. Working with other scientists, Behfar and Terzic tried applying the human platelet extract topically to skin, with positive results. “Exosomes tap into our own bodies’ natural regenerative abilities,” writes Martha McCully, who breaks down the science in our report. “The exosomes in Plated serums are derived from platelets in human blood. Not to be confused with red blood cells, exosomes contain no DNA or living matter.” Neither should they be confused with stem sells, notes McCully. “Exosomes signal stem cells to regenerate, but they are not stem cells.” The brand has plans to expand internationally, excluding Europe (where human-derived ingredients are not permitted in skin care).

In other skin care news, Estée Lauder is targeting the luxury market with the announcement today of its newest addition to the Re-Nutriv range – one of its top three lines and originally developed in 1956 by Estée Lauder herself. Launching in January 2024, Re-Nutriv Ultimate Diamond Transformative Brilliance Soft Crème, with Sirtivity-Lp™ is, the brand reports, the result of 15 years of research into sirtuins – the proteins responsible for regulating metabolic processes. “We have an entire industry that has exploded across medicine, biohacking, wellness and we are now seeing it come into beauty,” Justin Boxford, Estée Lauder Global Brand President, commented.

In beauty tech, there is an exciting, new-to-the-U.S. brand on the block. Geske, a German company with 250 state-of-the-art, eye-catchingly colorful products in its line-up launching into Shein, Urban Outfitters, and Amazon, and other U.S. retailers, in 2024. Geske first debuted at Cosmoprof 2023 in Las Vegas. Shining stars in the range include the SmartAppGuided Sonic Warm & Cool Mask, which gives skin a hot or cold massage.
