At CEW today, we report on Spate’s new research into the most popular hashtags used by the Black community on TikTok, as we close out Black History Month. In its analysis, Spate focused on four key areas—skin care, hair, makeup, and body care—in order to determine the beauty priorities and preferences of Black consumers using the platform. The data was analyxed in collaboration with B2B beauty brand developer Sula Labs, which focuses on melanin-rich consumers. “Sula Labs’ Founder AJ Addae and her team have graciously contributed their professional and personal experience to offer a well-rounded understanding of the preferences and priorities of Black consumers today,” said Spate Co-Founder, Yarden Horwitz.

When it comes to consumer trends, nail care is putting in a polished performance. In an exclusive report for CEW, Revuze reveals that in a study of over 1,356,852 unique e-tailer reviews between January 2023 and October 2023, nail products came out top in year over year review volume growth, compared with other products in the Color Cosmetics category. “Growth was largely driven by increased consumer interest for gel art, and the desire to achieve salon quality results at home,” writes Andrea Nagel at CEW.  Speaking of nail care, a viral “concealer” for nails is consistently selling out, thanks to influencers on social media. The Kur Pink Illuminating Nail Concealer has attracted over 1,300 five-star reviews.

In breaking fragrance news, Beautycounter is launching its first ever fragrance collection. “We had to make sure that the product actually performed for people, so that took a really long time, minus all the chemicals,” said Gregg Renfrew, who has been back at the helm as CEO of the California-based clean beauty company since the start of this month. According to Beautycounter, the scents contain “natural fragrance” and “safer synthetics,” with ingredients fully listed for transparency. Also in scent, Byredo has announced that Amelia Gray is the new face of its Mojave Ghost fragrance.

In the same week that Jones Road celebrated opening the doors to its latest brick and mortar store in Palm Beach, Florida, founder Bobbi Brown spoke to The Guardian about building the brand, not having a “title” this time around, and the range’s multi-generational appeal. “I love a clean slate,” she said. “You get to get rid of everything and think: ‘What would I do now?’”

In wellness news, Nicola Elliott, former UK beauty journalist and founder of the Neom natural beauty and wellbeing range, has been in Los Angeles this week publicizing the U.S. launch of her beauty and wellness book, The Four Ways to Wellbeing.
